I found this buffalo bur growing by the side of an asphalt street in Del Norte CO, in July 2019. In July of 2022 another plant was observed three blocks away . Although Ackerfield, Flora of Colorado, 2nd ed., 2022 does not show Solanum rostratum as present in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, it has been recorded from there in 1982, 1983, and 1984. These and the Del Norte occurrences indicate the species has persisted on ruderal ground in the upper Rio Grande watershed of Colorado.

Both this and the glossy-leaved S. prinophyllum popped up under a big tree after I had herbicided out the grasses, trying to get rid of a weedy grass and encourage natives like Dichondra to take over that spot. Didn't quite work out, and now the presence of these prickly little devils is making weeding in that location even more difficult. This is pungetium because of the covering of fine stellate hairs on the leaf upper surface, making it dull, not glossy. Both are post-disturbance colonisers.

One large plant in disturbed site adjacent to native forest. Checked my herbarium sample of this and the young shoots do have stellate hairs, so crispum has to be a better fit.
