These were smaller than grain of rice and I discovered them in my compost bucket in the kitchen. I think there were also some tiny cream colored larvae associated with them which I threw outside and rinsed off.

From subtle gall on Symphyotrichum lateriflorum, larva had black splotches unlike P. atra larvae.
Larva on 8/11. Left in its gall in a rearing bag, not examined until 10/2, with this fly produced.
