Seal of Approval for Region's Nature Challenge

We have had a very unusual wildlife sighting in the Bath and Bristol region, a common seal!

Although often seen in sheltered shorelines and estuaries, the seal was recorded in the River Avon between the Brislington and Hanham areas of East Bristol. One City Nature Challenge observer spotted the common seal munching on a fish, miles from the coast!

Good morning on day three of City Nature Challenge

It’s another gloriously sunny morning in the Bristol and Bath region. As a result of the warm weather we’re having, we have seen many more records of butterflies than we did during City Nature Challenge last year.

So far, we have had 67 observations of seven different butterfly species, despite them being very tricky to photograph!

We hope you have a great day recording the wildlife on your doorsteps.

Good afternoon on the final day of City Nature Challenge!

So far in the Bristol and Bath region, we have had an amazing 6,824 records. Nature enthusiasts in the region have really risen to the challenge of recording wildlife during lockdown.

10 cities have taken part in the UK, but with the digital emphasis on this year’s Challenge delivery, everyone across the UK has been encouraged to take part and connect to nature on their doorstep. Over the UK so far, there have been 49,731 records made by 4,013 observers.

We hope you enjoy the last 8 hours of the Challenge.

City Nature Challenge 2020 – UK DataBlitz – May 1st 2020

During the City Nature Challenge, over 4400 UK residents took part, uploading a staggering 63,039 biological records in just four days, of which 8,337 were made in the Bristol and Bath region.

The UK community is now coming together, online, on May 1st, to help identify and classify these records so they are as effective as possible for UK conservation and species records.
Please do join us – whatever your knowledge of wildlife is – it will be a great learning opportunity, socialising opportunity, and chance to do something new. We need everyone – from those who can help separate images between “birds” or “plants”, all the way down to those identifying species.

The sessions will be hosted by The Natural History Consortium, Natural History Museum, and the Field Studies Council, and are free to join on Zoom.

Join us on Zoom at 10am (mammals), 12pm (invertebrates), 2pm (birds), 4pm (plants), and then at 6pm for a social with a snack and drink in hand!

More details and Zoom links at: https://www.bnhc.org.uk/bioblitz/city-nature-challenge-uk-datablitz/

We hope to see you there!
