September 7 - Hagerman NWR BioBlitz
A bioblitz to document the flora and fauna of this National Wildlife Refuge by members of the Bluestem Master Naturalists in conjunction with the Texas Nature Trackers program. A BioBlitz is a fun and exciting way to learn about the plants and animals in your area. We'll be using a variety of methods to survey the park, including:
-Photographing plants and animals in iNaturalist
-Insect surveys using nets & blacklighting
-Sound recording in iNaturalist
No experience is necessary, and all ages are welcome. We'll provide all the materials you need, and Wendy will be on hand to help you identify the plants and animals you find. At the end of the day, we'll tally our findings on iNaturalist and see who can find the most species as a fun challenge.
This is a great opportunity to learn about the natural world and have some fun in the process.
Schedule:
9am: Hagerman NWR opens, (optional) meet at visitor center
9am-sunset: BioBlitzing throughout
8pm-11pm: Blacklighting and nocturnal invertebrate surveys in the Visitor Center Parking lot (we do not have permission to access any other parts of the refuge after dark)

Yay! :) I'll be there!!!
Great news!!!! We got approved to do blacklighting at night!!! We will set up blacklighting rigs at the visitor center and stay until 11pm. While we don't have permission to access other parts of the refuge after dark, this will seemingly be the VERY FIRST time that Hagerman NWR has had nocturnal invertebrate surveys after dark! Your observations at blacklighting will make a huge impact on the knowledge of our biodiversity within the refuge!

Oh, and is the butterfly garden part of the parking lot for this? The area under the gazebo might be nice to set up a station at...

I’ll bring my setup for the mothing event. This should be an interesting evening.
FYI I (Wendy Anderson) will be recording some videos during the evening blacklighting for use on the TPWD YouTube! This will be for a video about pollinators and invertebrates (especially fireflies).
If you do not want to be in the video please let me know and I will not include you in any of the video (neither speaking or in the background).
If you are particularly talented with filming and want to flex your creative muscles, I would love assistance!
I would love to feature some of you naturalists in the video, talking about blacklighting/insects/pollinators whatever!

Yesterday was an incredible event!! I know personally, being able to to witness and experience both the sunrise and sunset, and the evening stars while mothing on such a beautiful day at the refuge was stupendous and magical.
I hope everyone got adequate sleep and got home safe last night. We already have a TON of observations on this event, and many people haven't even uploaded their observations from their cameras or phones. I look forward to reviewing all your observations as they come in this week.

Had a blast! Would be nice if the refuge would open more after dark but whatcha gonna do. I'd love to see blacklights set up around dead woman's pond or deaver pond.
