A weekend in South Texas

Clifton Ladd , Mikael Behrens, and I spent March 7-10 birding and just being naturalists in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. We started at Falcon State Park and worked our way down to Port Isabel and Brownsville. Attached are my iNaturalist observations, and below are URLs for all of our eBird observations. One of the highlights included going out on the Laguna Madre with George and Scarlet Colley where we got to see a colonial rookery that they are helping to protect. In addition, we found a Mangrove Warbler and a Glaucous Gull as it was getting dark. On Sunday a front arrived and we found early migrants in the wood lots on South Padre Island. The Valley Land Fund has done a great job protecting these small fragments of migrant habitat on the island. Here is a Northern Parula found on one of the Sheepshead lots. Another highlight was the parrot roost at Oliveira Park in Brownsville. We estimated over 100 Red-crowned Parrots, along with White-fronted, Yellow-headed, and Red-lored.
