Fishes of Alberta的日誌

A change to Alberta fish taxonomy increases our species richness.

Cutthroat trout have been divided into several species with their own subspecies. iNaturalist has now accepted this revision, although FishBase and NatureServe have not. The changes have been accepted by Eschmeyer for well over a year.

In short, Westslope Cutthroat Trout gets elevated to its own species rank, and Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout (an introduced species in Alberta) is a subspecies of Rocky Mountain Cutthroat Trout.

So, in Alberta, we now have:

Oncorhynchus lewisi - Westslope Cutthroat Trout
Oncorhynchus virginalis bouvieri - Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout

The full list of cutthroat species/subspecies (Alberta and otherwise):

Oncorhynchus clarkii - Coastal Cutthroat Trout
Oncorhynchus henshawi - Lahontan Cutthroat Trout
O. h. alvordensis - Alvord Cutthroat Trout
O. h. henshawi - Lahontan Cutthroat Trout
