NYBG EcoQuest, August 2017 – Monarchs and Milkweeds

See the first NYBG EcoQuest -- Monarchs and Milkweeds

I just posted a photo of a Bug on a Milkweed and @fernandowagner already confirmed the id of the Bug. I also used the observation field to indicate that the Bug was visiting the Milkweed. Now that this observation is Research Grade, that interaction will soon be uploaded to GLoBI, the Global Biotic Interactions database and the plant record will be uploaded to GBIF, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.

These data will be used for research and conservation to preserve biodiversity and habitats. You can help.

How many Milkweeds and Milkweed/Animal interactions can you observe?

Hey Daniel, I assume you want only brand NEW observations, and not any observations that date from the last few months?
There is quite a lot of milkweed (in three species) on Randall's Island, so I will do what I can.

HI Susan,

Thanks for writing. New observations posted to iNaturalist are most welcome, but any will contribute valuable information, so please don't hesitate to add older ones too.

We look forward to see what you find. Don't forget to use the observation field for interactions so they get uploaded to GLoBI. Milkweeds are insect magnets!

Kind regards,

Daniel

Hey Daniel, I am not sure where exactly on the observation page you want us to record the plant and insect associations? You said on the "observation field"?

Do you mean in the Description? Or somewhere else?

Hi Susan,

Thanks for asking. The place to enter an interaction between a plant and an animal is in the section at the bottom of the main observation editing page, right before . There is a box that says "Add a field". I suggest choosing ones that already exit, like "visiting", "is pollinated by" etc... A good general one is "associated with". Selecting one of these will bring up another box where you put the name of the second organism. You are creating a specific type of association between organism A (the one being edited) and organism B (you put in the name). This same field is also used for many other purposes as evidenced by the long list of fields. Give it a try and let me know if you are still having trouble. Thank you!

Maybe I am not looking in the right place.
I am using the new interface. I have "Associated plant" as a choice, but Milkweed is not an available option on the list.
I do not appear to have "add a field" as an available option on this new interface.

Great job on the insects. Seven species so far. Let's try to find a few more Milkweed species. Only four species so far.

I saw milkweed-invert interactions today at Coney Island but while I photographed them I did not upload them to iNat though I can try to do so retroactively. I know the approximate location.
