I'm not totally sure on the species and was waffling between a few types of Coelioxys, but this seems the closest? I've noticed a lot of leafcutter bees in the yard recently - I thought that's what this was at first but it has a much pointier abdomen and the red legs which lead me to cuckoo leafcutters.

Photos are from different dates but same nest group in my yard. Primrose photo is this year, nest photos are last year. Same burrows are in use again in 2024.

Having trouble with the species on this one. C. pandora would be the natural choice because there are photos of it from the area already, but the hind wing looks kind of funny. Wondering if it's actually C. doris instead?
Oh, and in case you are wondering about the photo of it upside down. We normally remove moths we find by light sources rather than leaving them to get eaten by birds or sit there night after night. We tried to gently coax this one onto a finger. Usually works, right? It actually played dead! In a really spectacular way. Obviously showing off those orange stripes.

Can't find any record of this being documented in Utah, but it certainly matches other images on iNat and I was definitely in a big ponderosa forest! Pretty neat.

What is this?! It was the biggest, fattest wasp I've ever seen, and it just picked up an almost-fully-grown grasshopper in my yard! I followed it to take pictures, which it did NOT like. It actually set the grasshopper down on a branch, flew over and landed on my chest, and then went back to its prey. MESSAGE RECEIVED!

on Townsendia incana. Doesn't appear as though this genus has been observed in Utah before? But other observations show asteraceae being a host, and it sure looks similar.
