This is a species of parasitoid wasp. They lay eggs on larvae of beetles and the hatched larvae feed on the host larvae. At least two species of Spathius, Spathius agrili and Spathius galinae, have been used as biological control agents against the Emerald Ash Borer beetle. S. agrili is native to northern Asia. S. galinae is native to eastern Russia and territories reaching South Korea. S. elegans is a species that's native to eastern United States.

Motionless, stretched across the Long Path in Alpine NJ.

What a mellow (lethargic) pair of snakes... I almost stepped on them and leapt off to the side of the path to avoid tripping over them. No response.
They did not want to move off the trail. Did not react to a stick almost touching them. I lifted the first one off the path, with no resistance, ( the second didn't even budge).
I gently placed them off the path and expected them to scoot. They stayed exactly as I put them. Finally the 1st uncoiled, and moved slowly to the other side of the path and disappeared. The second followed, (much faster) but only after a gentle prod.
