Basing on photomicrographs, I think it may be Syntrichia sp., but I'm familiar with european boreal mosses only. Also now I'm not sure about compliance of collected samples with the field photo 🤨

Nice illustration of the dorsal leaf bases wrapping and forming a criscross pattern on the top of the stem.

@terrymcintosh ??? The one capsule I found was ~0.8mm. Distal leaves with short to moderate awns, lower leaves almost all muticous.

Tentative ID without samples collected, but present in hydrated soil pockets in depressions of granite flatrock

Soil in old truck tracks. Seems like the other end of variation to barnesii, but I don't know much about the two taxa.

JC1642 growing on soil and soil over rock. Interesting cucullate leaves, lamina unistratose, distally incurved AND recurved, hydroids absent.

JC1505 growing on soil in openings of scrub oak chaparral (Quercus john-tuckeri). Moderate to gentle NW facing slope, full to filtered sun.
