A weird one (at least nothing I'm familiar with). Clusters of irregular, hollow, thin-walled galls at base of Q. macrocarpa stems. Hidden in leaf litter.

Originally thought that it was a form of fungus, but then when closer realized it was a hive.

Growing on decaying log.

Observed in an indoor pot containing a Norfolk pine. The soil is a coco coir-based organic potting mix.

Juvenile calling / chirping from tree cavity. Didn't see a parent for the 10-15 minutes while I was observing.
