Note entirely metallic green body; dark brown eyes; terminal black tips on upper 1/5 of wings.
Note large, bulky size; wrinkles on torso and neck; short, stout legs. This is the orange-tailed form endemic to South Mountain Park near Phoenix.
Note whitish underparts; dark streaked belly band; reddish-orange tail.
These two specimens were spotted from my vehicle and relocated off the sandy road. Note the two central occipital horns, pale middorsal stripe, and dark lines radiating from the eyes to the lip. These two were engaged in mating ritual, as evident by the smaller male gasping the female's occipital horn. These lizards are truly remarkable. Aside from consuming harvester ants, they will also eat blister beetles and velvet ants.
