Change in Neola moth caterpillar colour and form as it crawled into the soil presumably to pupate today.
Found on a Eucalyptus sapling in dry Sclerophyll bushland. About 25mm long. I don't know if it could fly effectively.
There were many of these at this tree and they were very loud. Not shy at all.
P. lewisii ?
I first observed this sawfly on this young Eucalypt 14 days ago https://inaturalist.ala.org.au/observations/139103146
Today's observation appears to indicate that this is a female sawfly who has stayed to guard her eggs and is now protecting the newly hatched larvae.
Pergagrapta polita?
Identified as Pergagrapta polita on Bowerbird by Matthew Connors: "Can anyone confirm this ID?"
Remnant of communal pupation cocoons, picked up off the ground. Quite old and weathered but still coherent, showing how tough the material is. Some but not all cells appeared to be parasitised.
There were 27 Charaxes sempronius feeding on 3 different rotten bananas. Only one group shown in this photo.
On the summit of Mt Maroon, never seen this species in such numbers especially in SEQ
At least two individuals hilltopping. Perching in the canopy rather than dead branches.
Chrysalis on trunk of Quandong tree, Santalum acuminatum (with mistletoe) at Moorunde Wildlife Reserve.
Observed feeding on fermented Euc sap. Tony Morton, a local entomologist told me in 2012 'has told me that in the last 5-10 years, it has been more frequently seen in the Castlemaine/Harcourt area and he believes it has been breeding near there. In addition to being attracted by tree sap, several of these butterflies have been reported feeding on rotten figs.'
Unusual Amyema, possible A.quandang X A.pendula hybrid? Has quality's of both species. Elongated and greener leaves than A.quandang. Buds and flowers are also longer although upright. The immediate area around this track junction has a high concentration of Grey Mistletoe and a few Drooping Mistletoe nearby. Found a number of these intermediate plants in this area on both Acacia mearnsii and Acacia melanoxylon.
Comparative images included. Image 3 showing buds. 4 showing leaves at growing end. 10 & 11 showing open flowers.
Possibly. The wavy forewings are distinctive, but the hindwings are simply rounded. The resting positions (images 2,3) are unusual.
Gynopteryx ada has a similar dot and medial line on forewing.
Dissomorphia australiaria is close, but the wing marks are wrong.
