One of the best weeks/weekends ever at the Texas Master Naturalist State Conference down in the Lower Rio Grande Valley!
This morning I didn't have any obligations, so I went out exploring just a bit by myself -- stopped by the next door McAllen Nature Center and the National Butterfly Center. So neat. :)

Small wasp, body about 1 mm in length; found in samples of Euphorbia polycarpa tubular galls, but not known if it's associated with the galls.

I believe it may be the Black and Gold or Sonoran, but these have 3 yellow stripes on the abdomen.

Species is mostly a guess.
Workers where crowded around a nest opening with a few males. This species had preformed nuptial flights that night.

Got a decent series of this Beameromyia below Marshall Gulch on Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina mountains. Saw one displaying by bouncing in the air, the others were found by sweeping shin-high grasses or on twigs. I think they key out to B. occidentis in Martin 1957 (especially with the male showing the “C” shape). Interesting how this species has an apical swelling and upturn on the abdomen (especially visible in the male) kinda like Leptopteromyia. Specimens in collection (ethanol and pinned).

Several hundred clinging to the upper stems of an isolated brittle bush. I count 43 here and there were 7 other similar clusters.

Elevation was around 5,700 feet (around 1,700 meters), they nested in an oak tree around 8-10 feet up between the live and dead wood of a branch. (Host tree here)
Workers moved jerkily and were shy, but not as fast or skittish as I expected.
Wasn't expecting to see these here!
