A number of iNaturalist observations have been posted of this undescribed taxon from Kelso Dunes and Soda Lake Basin sands, past collectors have placed under M. transmontana. Tasha La Doux and I in the process of compiling background information and conducting morphological and genetic research leading up to the publishing of this as a new taxon.

Spent 9 hours searching for D pictus today. Hit several CalFlora points in Kern River Valley and searched numerous textbook habitat sites - nothing. These were the only plants I could find at the Blue Mountain Rd population. Found them literally as the sun was setting. Bad year for D pictus or just bad luck?

Melaleuca sphaerodendra var. sphaerodendra est un arbuste ou arbre, endémique de Nouvelle-Calédonie, de la famille des Myrtaceae.
Cette variété est surtout présente dans le sud et le sud-est de la Grande Terre, mais aussi sur la côte ouest dans des secteurs très isolés.
Elle pousse sur substrat ultramafique, entre 400 et 900 m d'altitude, où elle est une espèce typique des maquis ouvert sur forte pente.
