Medium large population halfway up algific talus slope

So tiny

Specimen taken for herbarium voucher.

This population was an honor to see. I’ve been fascinated by algific talus slopes and the relict, disjunct ecosystems they create for years.

Pin Oak Prairie Scientific and Natural Area, Fillmore County, Minnesota.

Huge population on Ylvi slope. Probably buffered by the recent removal of impenetrable buckthorn invasion. Large amounts of afternoon sun now reach the ground.

Trying to ID for a project. No picture of tail unfortunately. The circle in the center has a diameter of ~2.5 inches if that is helpful.

Genus Pulsatilla not currently accepted -> Anemone patens var. multifida. Found only in original remnant prairies in NE IA. Dry limestone prairie, grainy calcareous substrate. Rare.

Dry rocky limestone remnant prairie. Plants tall and common.

Apparently they nest outside the CFL?

Absolutely massive specimen on campus. Clearly open grown. You have to wonder what this slope was like 150+ years ago.

Getting mobbed

Captured and released as part of a long-term banding program at Luther College. This particular station is studying migratory patterns of hawks and falcons.

Beautiful bird. These are the best pictures I could get through my binoculars. I asked the Daniel and Loshiro the guides what the name of this bird was in Maa. They call it enepurai.
