Millions of caterpillars were on the host plants (croton menyharthii) and all over the ground. Two caterpillars would start fighting when encountering.
The ID of the host plant was provided by a local bird guide as the rough-leaved croton.

Growing in 50cm of water it was attached to emergent vegetation. It was completely submerged medway between the ground and the surface. Roots entangled in the emergent vegetation stopped it from floating away. Three different types of leaves: short succulent orchid-like leaves at the base all growing in a single plane; long and thin leaves growing up from that; and then it was grown in captivity and when the leaves reached the surface they formed rounded leaves floating on the surface.
