I saw clusters of tiny cones on these 5-needle pines on our hike last week in this same area (elevation ~1880m - 1950 m) and assumed they were Pinus albicaulis, although there are also trees on the same ridge with the large cones of Pinus flexilis (the odd one on the trees, more on the ground).
Returning today, I found trees with both these tiny cones and the large cones I'd associate with Pinus flexilis on the same tree, as in these photos.
Are the small ones new cones of the year on P. flexilis, while the bigger ones (still green) are from last year or a prior year... ??
