This species is only found in primary forest habitats along river banks, preferably on hilly slopes. It is endemic for Palawan (one specimen was found many years ago in a herbarium in Sabah but this turned out to be an error). The species is under threat as Palawans' primary forests mostly remain unprotected.

I hiked this part of Liberty Lake called Coot Peninsula. I was amazed by the concentrated mass number of giant mounds built by the Allegheny Mound Ant here. I encountered at least 20 individual mounds on my hike. Some were in clusters, some were busy with activity and some seemed rather deserted. I setup my new tripod so that I could position the camera firmly an inch from the mound and got a few good macro shots with my raynox macro adapter. It didn't take long for the ants to start noticing and before long they were venturing up the tripod and onto my shoes so I decided to move along. I took a video of the mound too located here:
