Baltic rush is most common along the margin of the wetland at the transition with the upland sagebrush steppe and grassland. This site is in the Blackfoot Waterfowl Protection Area along highway 200 west of Lincoln.
Baltic rush (Juncus balticus or Juncus arcticus ssp. littoralis) is a native rhizomatous perennial rush generally of moist meadows and pastures. The wiry stems are surrounded at the base by a bladeless leaf sheath, and the inflorescence is positioned toward the apparent tip of the stem. That is, the involucral bract (what appears to be a continuation of the stem above the point where the inflorescence attaches) is much shorter than the total length of the stem.
