Periodical cicada being eaten by a Gray Petaltail. This cicada looks like either Magicicada tredecim or M. neotredecim, both of which have an area of orange coloring between the eye and the wing (second photo) and an almost entirely orange abdomen (third photo). It was part of Brood XXIII (23), which included Magicicada tredecim, M. neotredecim, M. tredecassini, & M. tredecula.

This observation is for the female, to the left/bottom in the first 3 photos, to the right in the 4th photo. No orange patches behind eyes, smaller than M. septendecim, orange pigmented abdominal bands.

This ID may be a bit far out, but the proportions and contours of the pronotum (especially the two projections along the front margin) look dead-on for this genus; compare https://bugguide.net/node/view/1740152/bgpage

This tiny aradid landed on my hand while I was sitting on my deck, in a wooded part of western Cincinnati.

This was recorded on 5/31/2021 at 3:48pm. The temp was 75°F (24°C). You can hear a series of clicks followed by 'buzzing' in several places in this recording which is a video converted to an .MP3 file. The image of the cicada was taken from the video. When the male called, he lifted his wings slightly to make a 'buzzing' sound.

• when viewed from the side, dorsal outline of elytra is undulating

Calopteron reticulatum

• metasternum more or less reddish at middle anteriorly
• antennae with 2nd segment reddish or brownish
• several other antennal segments usually partially reddish in ventral view
