Washed up onto the salt marsh at high tide.
Later measured at 2m from the tip of the anal fin to the tip of the dorsal fin and 169cm wide.
Specimens taken by Otago Museum staff later in the day.

Observed and photographed by my colleague Mike Morrison. A rare find usually associated with deep water in the tropics. This specimen was 3 m in length, 300 mm from spine to belly and 75-100mm thick and was estimated to weigh around 50 kg.

Oarfish found at Aramoana beach on ANZAC day 2022. Total length 3.5 m. The fish was alive when first found attempts to move into deeper water were unsuccessful. It was evident the oarfish was near death.

We saw dozens of these fish dead on the beach. We also saw several beaching themselves, as if suicidal. Most odd. I don't know what kind of fish it is, I just chose the top suggestion.
