ecotype 的鑑定

Woodpeckers loved the suet feeder throughout the snowy NJ winter and into spring. I believe this one is the Downy. It was definitely the smaller of the 2 that visited the feeder. Hard to tell the difference between the Downy and Hairy woodpeckers when not side by side.

This pair (male and female) were hanging around much of the winter in ponderosa pine trees near a suet feeder in a suburban yard.

I was wanting to see one of these, and I'd found a lot of elytra around where critters had eaten them. The kids found this one in curtains of a kitchen where we were staying. Unfortunately it was too big for the only lens I'd taken (apart from my phone). This beetle hated me with a passion and was extremely alert to my activities. It bit me when I moved it from the curtain to my jumper (I admired it's spirit...it didn't hurt much and it was obvious what it was about to do...).

This is NZs largest and heaviest beetle.
