Found this insect while gardening in the autumn of 2013. Would be very grateful for an ID.

Growing on a north leaning slope Burn marks around base
Inky cap, curled up with veins Blackish grey
Growing in the midst of other miscellaneous plants
Growing off moss on a fallen down redwood tree White, hard Near river
Large, no visible burl. On ledge of stream.
Drawn to the sunshine.
Redwood sapling (unsure) found growing on another living tree near a river
Low-lying, found near a river. Intertwined with dead tree.
