No one I have shown this to has come up with a satisfactory identification. It is big like astelia grandis but it is well above the creek and along side dracophyllum sinclairii. Our local council guy thinks it might be a hybrid. There are plenty of them in this one part of the reserve.
The biggest ones (from which the leaf sample comes from) are above a deep cut channel leading straight down to the stream.
Fallen tree branch of a Streblus banksii canopy tree, in tawa/titoki forest. The leaves do look quite small, so I'm not sure if it is a hybrid of S. heterophyllus.
