I found this madrone along a walking path by an open field. This tree was growing nest to Douglas-fir and oak.
It was a sunny day and hot, in the upper 80's.
Madrone trees have distinctive bark. The young bark is a light brownish green color and smooth plus it is cool to the touch while the older bark is reddish brown and peals off.
It's leaves are oval and evergreen.
