My friend James saw this New Zealand Sea Lion hunting at what it seemed to be a carpet shark (mottled colouration; both dorsal fins situated towards tail end; tail shape distinctive) at Te Rauone Beach. Savage!
Observation and images courtesy of Shona Campbell-Savage and Richard Savage:
"The shark looked quite grazed and scratched.. perhaps from being tossed around in surf. Some of the smaller fins on underside had a bit of blood around them but no obvious puncture wounds or anything that we could see. It was still alive when we arrived in that it had a last thrash, then it all stopped. We had first observed it 30 minutes prior when out cycling (I was unsure just what it was in passing), then returned by vehicle to investigate and take a few pictures. The tide was still coming in and waves prevented me from getting too close for any length of time."
With Level 3 in place, the first weekend we have restoration of lots of abandoned fish as the fishermen resume their routines. I'm sure the gulls are happy for it.
