The genus Otholobium contains over 50 species in Southern Africa (SAf) and 8 in South America (SAm). In this new paper (see at the end) the genus Otholobium is placed within genus Psoralea, which in turn adopts two new subgenera: subgenus Psoralea (containing true or old genus Psoralea) and subgenus Otholobium (old genus Otholobium and a few new species). In a future paper, the SAm Otholobium will be given a new genus name: Grimolobium. This has yet to take place.

Therefore, this split only aims to move SAf Otholobium to subgenus Otholobium (all species have already been shifted individually due to minor spelling changes). This is why the genus Otholobium and its 8 SAm species remain intact for the time being - until the future paper officially recognises SAm Otholobium as a distinct genus. Then, a new swap will take care of this. It is redundant to move SAm Otholobium into a new temporary genus Otholobium concept, given this inevitable future change.

Effectively, this is part 1 of a two-part split to be carried out over time where part 2 will cover moving SAm Otholobium to Grimolobium.
