Paraphyly of Campethera with Geocolaptes (Fuchs et al. 2017a) is avoided by treating Brown-eared Woodpecker Campethera caroli and Buff-spotted Woodpecker Campethera nivosa within the genus Pardipicus, as Pardipicus caroli and Pardipicus nivosus (Dowsett and Gregory 2022).
