According to Markle 2018, the Cutthroat Trout has four distinct species level genetic delineations, and are separated into the four species:

• Coastal Cutthroat (clarkii)
• Westslope Cutthroat (lewisi) - with 8 undescribed subspecies
• Lahontan Cutthroat (henshawi) -- with 2 undescribed subspecies
• Black-spotted Cutthroat (virginalis) -- with 3 undescribed subspecies
