The genus Lybius is evidently paraphyletic (Moyle 2004) with respect to Tricholaema. The large, “toothed” barbets Brown-breasted Barbet Lybius melanopterus, Black-backed Barbet Lybius minor, Double-toothed Barbet Lybius bidentatus, Bearded Barbet Lybius dubius, and Black-breasted Barbet Lybius rolleti share similarities in voice and sexual dimorphism and are now placed by WGAC in Pogonornis, as Pogonornis melanopterus, Pogonornis minor, Pogonornis bidentatus, Pogonornis dubius, and Pogonornis rolleti.
