Had a wonderful time at the Ladd Land with a group of folks to document as much as possible! The weather was surprisingly quite good (it was raining earlier this day) for the day time, but it was a little too chilly at night for the black-lighting. Looking forward to doing this again at the Ladd Land soonish!

Two individuals collected in same locality/date, at Wehle Land Conserv Ctr in Bullock Co., AL. One key to distinguishing this sp from G. tesselatus is the rounded lower margin on the eye.

I beheld this large dark flying insect about a 20th of a second before it smacked into the inner corner of my open right eye, having given me no time to guard against impact. Squinching my eye closed, I frantically clawed at it, praying it wasn’t a wasp or blister beetle. That felt like five minutes but was probably only three seconds before it dropped to the grass and tried to hide. In embarrassment, I hope, because my eyes are not flower-like. I kept prodding it out of the grass because I damn sure wanted a photo of my attacker! These are the best I could do with it in constant motion.

This is either what is now called K. cincta spinifera, in which case the subspecies should be given full species status, or a related but undescribed species (I have specimens from across the southeastern U.S. that are broadly sympathetic with nominate K. cincta). Incidentally, I also believe K. c. sonorensis (west Texas to Arizona) should be given full species status. Collected in an ethanol-baited Lindgren funnel trap in dry post oak woodland.
