First Nature Walk (9/25/2024)

Before heading home after a very long week, I decided to do the nature walk assignment. It was a very hectic week were I barely had time to sit back and reflect. Taking this nature walk really helped slow down the pace. I found it interesting that I go by Pine Tree Reserve everyday on my runs yet I had never actually been aware of my surroundings. I stumbled upon a variety of trees, plants, and animals. The weather was nice. Not in a sunny, summer way but in a chilly, cloudy way (not too cold though). As I walked I noticed a lot of acorns falling all around me and a lot of noise coming from the trees, I’m guessing that there were animals in the branches. I posted picture of the trees to get an ID of what each tree was, although by the name (Pine Tree Reserve) I should assume that they are pines (but maybe not all of them). I also posted a picture of a very cute and small pine tree (it stood out from the rest). This tree caught my eye cause the rest of the trees were tall, skinny, and barky, but this one was small, fat, and bushy. As I walked, I also felt tempted to grab one of the pine cones from the ground and for some reason I smelled it. I was very disappointed to learn that it smelled like nothing. I guess that was very gullible of me but in my defense, I did not grow up with any exposure to pine trees (just the scented Christmas candles and pine cones). I also posted some pictures of the plants I saw. There were some berry-looking red fruits (viburnums) that I took a picture of. I looked them up and it said they were edible but I didn’t want to risk it. I also took some pics of grasses that were dry because I wanted to ID them despite the fall season already taking down the leaves and greenness. I saw two baby chipmunk run by me but they were too fast to capture a picture. I also saw a dead rat but I did not take a picture of it (out of respect, I felt really sad). I noticed that there was no blood/openings so I’m not sure how it died, I’m guessing some sort of impact. But apart from that I really enjoyed the nature walk. When posting all my flics I felt pretty confident about all the species names provided by the app except for the white baneberry one, I am pretty skeptical about that identification so I’m not sure.
