October 9th - Condylostylus longicornis (yes, again)

We're happy to announce another online meeting! Here are the details:

This next meeting is a review of a species we have looked at several times now, and it needs our help! There is still over 1,000 Needs ID observations of Condylostylus longicornis in the US. This week we will review the identification of C. longicornis and then try our best to reduce this pile of Needs ID observations.

Just as a reminder: our meetings are entirely informal, and everyone is invited to speak their minds and ask questions to the group. Participation is key to learning!

Please leave a comment either to let us know if you're planning to come or to subscribe to be notified of future events! Questions are also welcome.

The Zoom meeting will open at 4 PM EDT on Sunday the 9th.

I wish I could join tonight, but alas. Unfortunately, other family requirements take precedence.
If you could send me the traits that separate C. longicornis from other Condylostylus - I will be work on your list of IDs.

West of the 100th meridian, you simply need to see that the hind tibia is black and either the fore tibia is yellow or the wings are unmarked (except for a small anterior brown area).

East of the 100th meridian, you need to know that the hind tibia is black, the fore tibia is yellow, the wings are unmarked (see above), and there are no long hairs on any side of the fore tibia. That should take care of any look-alike species.

Didn't note the unusual meeting time :-(

Yeah, I think that happened to several others, as well. Next week we'll be back at 8 pm!

@zdanko Regarding Condylostylus - most of these eastern observations identified as C. longicorns that have dark legs do not have any wing markings. I am sure you covered this last night.
The BugGuide description states "wings OFTEN with dark bands, usually joined in U shape". Are unbanded wings still C. longicorns? or another species? There are a lot of unmarked wings on iNat identified as C. longicorns.

Ignore my question, I see your note that eastern species do not have wing markings.

@judya you must be reading something wrong on BugGuide - C. longicornis never has marked wings, at most with a diffuse anterior brown area.

There are several Eastern species with wing markings, but C. longicornis is not one of them.
